About Gerdau Trade
**Gerdau is Brazil's largest steelmaker and the biggest long-steel producer in the Americas — but it has quietly become an American company, earning roughly three-quarters of its EBITDA in the United States.** It makes the unglamorous but essential stuff of construction: reinforcing bar, merchant bars, structural beams and wire rod — the steel that goes into buildings, bridges, factories and, increasingly, data centres and solar farms — plus some flat steel, iron ore and specialty steel. It runs 29 plants across Brazil, the United States, Canada, Argentina, Peru and Uruguay, employs about 30,000 people, and is listed in São Paulo (B3) and on the New York Stock Exchange through American depositary shares, with an equity value of roughly R$41 billion. What makes Gerdau unusual is *how* it makes steel. Around 70% of its output is recycled scrap melted in electric-arc "mini-mills" built small and close to customers, which keeps both costs and carbon low and makes it hard for importers to compete on freight. On profit the business is really two engines: North America, which now throws off about three-quarters of earnings, and Brazil, its traditional heartland. Over the last twelve months the group turned R$69.5 billion of sales into R$11.5 billion of operating cash profit (a 16.5% margin) and R$4.2 billion of net income. Gerdau is 125 years old, still run by the founding family (Metalúrgica Gerdau holds 98% of the votes), and famously careful with debt — it borrows very little for a heavy industrial company. The story today is a tale of two markets: U.S. mills protected by steel tariffs and running their fullest order book since 2021, against a Brazilian home market squeezed to near-breakeven by a flood of cheap imports. The credit carries investment-grade ratings from all three major agencies — BBB (S&P), BBB (Fitch) and Baa2 (Moody's) — three notches above Brazil's own sovereign rating. *(publication date: 19-08-2026)*
