About Whirlpool
Whirlpool Corporation is one of the world's largest home appliance manufacturers, headquartered in Benton Harbor, Michigan. The company has been making kitchen and laundry appliances for over 100 years and sells products under well-known brands including Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, JennAir, Amana, Brastemp, and InSinkErator. Close to 90% of revenues come from the Americas. The business has two main pillars: Major Domestic Appliances (MDA) in North America, which generates around 66% of total sales, and MDA Latin America, contributing about 21%. A key competitive strength is that approximately 80% of appliances sold in the U.S. are manufactured domestically, which provides a meaningful cost and tariff advantage over Asian rivals who rely more heavily on imports. The appliance industry is highly cyclical. About 65% of demand comes from replacement purchases — people replacing broken or ageing machines — which provides a relatively stable floor. The remaining 35% is more discretionary, tied to new home construction and renovation activity. This discretionary portion has been weak since 2023, as high mortgage rates kept U.S. home sales near 30-year lows and dampened consumer spending on big-ticket items. Whirlpool also faces intense competition from large global players such as LG, Samsung, Haier, Midea, and Electrolux. An additional risk is ongoing litigation in the U.K. related to the Grenfell Tower fire, where a Hotpoint-branded appliance is alleged to have started the blaze, as well as unresolved tax disputes in Brazil totalling around $700 million in contingent liabilities. Financially, the company is under pressure. Ongoing EBIT margin was 4,7% in 2025, down from 5,3% in 2024, squeezed by tariff costs and a promotional pricing environment driven by competitors stockpiling imports ahead of new U.S. tariffs. Leverage, measured as debt to EBITDA, stood at 6,3x at end-2025 — a level that rating agencies consider very high for this type of business. Free cash flow was negative in 2025 for the third consecutive year. Total debt was approximately $6,2 billion at end-2025, with around $587 million maturing in 2026 and $702 million in 2027. The company's $3,5 billion revolving credit facility expires in May 2027, which adds refinancing urgency. For 2026, management targets revenue growth of around 5%, EBIT margin of 5,5%–5,8%, and free cash flow of $400–$500 million — but delivery will depend heavily on whether the pricing environment stabilises and tariff headwinds ease. Whirlpool's senior unsecured bonds are rated BB by S&P (outlook: negative), BB+ by Fitch (outlook: negative), and Ba3 by Moody's (outlook: negative). All three agencies downgraded the company in 2025, and the negative outlooks reflect the risk of further downgrades if leverage does not decline and free cash flow does not recover as expected.
