About Suzano Austria
Suzano S.A. is a Brazilian forestry company, founded in 1924 and listed in São Paulo and New York. It is the largest producer of eucalyptus pulp and of traded "market" pulp in the world, with capacity of 13.4 million tonnes a year across 13 mills in Brazil, plus 2 packaging plants in the United States. The company plants eucalyptus, harvests it after about seven years, and turns the wood into pulp — the fibre that becomes tissue, toilet paper, packaging board and printing paper. (The dollar bond is issued by its Austrian finance subsidiary, Suzano Austria GmbH, and unconditionally guaranteed by the parent.) The business has two segments. Pulp generates about 76% of revenue; paper, packaging and tissue make up the remaining 24%. Around 64% of the pulp Suzano sells ends up in sanitary products — the kind of demand that holds up through a recession. Sales are global: Asia takes roughly 48% of pulp sales (China alone buys 39% of pulp exports), Europe and the Middle East about 28%, and the Americas about 24%. Suzano's defining feature is cost leadership. A eucalyptus tree in Brazil is ready to harvest in about 7 years, against 25 or more for northern-hemisphere pine, and the company owns most of its forests, so wood — 39% of production cost — is largely self-supplied. That puts its cash production cost, about R$802 per tonne and falling, at the very bottom of the global industry, and its EBITDA margin has stayed between 41% and 57% across the last seven years. Management has published a verifiable target to cut total operating cost to R$1,983 per tonne by 2027 and reports it is on track. Financially, Suzano carries net debt of about US$13.0 billion, or 3.3 times EBITDA — mid-range against its own history of 2.0× to 4.9×. It holds US$6.1 billion of cash plus a committed credit line, which together already cover every repayment due through the end of 2028; average debt life is over six years, at a fixed average cost of 5.0% in dollars, and interest is covered 3.6 times by EBITDA. A new CEO (2024) and CFO (2025) have been expanding around the pulp core — buying Kimberly-Clark's tissue operations, US packaging plants and a 15% stake in Lenzing — and repurchasing shares. The company is rated investment grade by all three major agencies (BBB− / BBB− / Baa3), each with a Positive outlook.
