German yields edged lower across the curve this week. The main driver was cheaper energy, as tensions in the Middle East eased and hopes grew for a deal to reopen a key oil shipping route. Lower energy costs ease the inflation pressure the European Central Bank watches most closely. The move was modest — the 2-year and 10-year both fell about 7 basis points — leaving German yields near the middle of their recent range.

US yields also fell this week, broadly in line with Europe. Easing energy prices and a softer-than-expected July jobs report pulled yields down across the curve, by roughly 7 to 10 basis points. Even after the drop, US yields remain well above where they started the year — the 2-year is still up more than 70 basis points in 2026. The 10-year ended the week near 4.65%.

UK yields fell too, and by a touch more than in the US. Gilts followed the global move lower as energy prices eased. At the same time, markets see little chance of a Bank of England rate hike at its next meeting, which supported shorter-dated yields. Yields fell roughly 11 to 13 basis points across the curve.

This week's biggest gainers were mostly US high-yield bonds, which benefited as the fall in interest rates lifted prices. Whirlpool led the list, with several of its bonds rising across different maturities. Other strong performers included the high-yield names Synthomer, Domtar and E.W. Scripps. Lower-rated, higher-coupon bonds tend to move the most when rates fall, which is what played out here.

The biggest losers fell even as the broader market rallied, which points to company-specific pressure rather than the move in rates. Icahn Enterprises saw several of its bonds decline. AdaptHealth's bonds were among the weakest, along with the high-yield names Cerba and GQM Services.

Note: only long-term senior unsecured ratings were taken into account.
Rating moves were mixed this week. On the upside, Seagate Technology was lifted back to investment grade, with further upgrades for SK Hynix and Kinross Gold. The most notable downgrade was Electronic Arts, which S&P cut several notches from investment grade into high-yield territory. Corteva was also downgraded. Overall, upgrades and downgrades were fairly balanced across well-known names.

It was a very busy week for new bond sales. Alphabet led the corporate deals with a large multi-part sale to help fund its artificial-intelligence spending, and Charter Communications and HSBC brought sizeable deals of their own. Governments and public agencies were just as active, with jumbo sales from the European Union, the European Investment Bank, Spain and Italy. The strong demand for these deals shows investors still have plenty of appetite for new bonds.
