WKN: Definition & Meaning | Bondfish

What it means

The WKN is Germany’s national security identifier, assigned by the numbering agency for German instruments. It uses six digits or letters (for example, a well-known bund might carry a WKN like “110252”) and has no built-in check digit or country prefix. Historically it was the primary way German investors looked up a security before the international ISIN became standard.

Today the WKN sits alongside the ISIN on German broker and exchange pages. The two are directly related: a German security’s ISIN typically contains its WKN, so you can move between them easily on most German data providers.

Why it matters for bond investors

If you trade bonds through a German broker or on venues such as Deutsche Börse or Stuttgart, you will often search by WKN. Quoting the correct WKN (or the matching ISIN) avoids buying the wrong tranche of an issuer’s debt — issuers can have many bonds outstanding with similar names but very different coupons, maturities and seniority. For cross-border trading, always confirm the ISIN as well, since the WKN is recognised mainly within Germany.
