Yield Curves

German yields rose across the whole curve this week. Longer maturities moved the most, with the 10-year up about 7 basis points to 3.20%. The main driver was a broad rise in global bond yields, as firm economic data pushed investors to trim bets on near-term rate cuts. With the European Central Bank widely expected to stay on hold, there was little to pull yields back down.

EUR Germany Sovereign Curve

The US curve steepened. Short-term Treasury yields dipped slightly — the 2-year eased to 4.17% — as a softer jobs report kept hopes alive for a Federal Reserve rate cut later this year. Longer yields went the other way, with the 10-year rising to 4.69%. Investors were focused on the July inflation report, and a heavy wave of new bond supply added pressure at the long end.

USD US Sovereign Curve

UK gilts had the roughest week of the three. Yields jumped across the curve, with the 10-year climbing about 12 basis points to 5.04% — the highest of the major markets. Sticky inflation and concern about how much new government debt is on the way kept pressure on. The Bank of England is still expected to hold rates high, giving yields little reason to fall.

GBP UK Sovereign Curve

With short-term yields holding firm and longer yields drifting higher, the tone favours collecting income in shorter and intermediate maturities rather than reaching for extra duration.

Top gainers

High-yield bonds led the gains as risk appetite improved. Fears about heavy AI-related spending eased after a large new financing backstop was announced, and a softer US jobs report calmed worries about further rate hikes. That lifted riskier names across the board. Finnish paper group Stora Enso topped the table, and fellow paper producer Domtar also rose. Chemicals borrower Ineos Quattro Fin 2, gaming operator Caesars and software firm Workday rounded out the top gainers.

Top losers

Two forces drove the week’s biggest fallers. The first was company-specific trouble: Medical Properties Trust, whose bonds trade under the MPT name, was cut to selective default, and two of its bonds led the losers. Cogent Communications also dropped after a rating downgrade, and payments group Paysafe fell as well. The second was rising long-term yields, which pushed down the prices of long-dated high-grade bonds such as Harley-Davidson’s 2045 issue.

Rating changes

Note: only long-term senior unsecured ratings were taken into account.

Upgrades outnumbered downgrades this week, 23 to 13. Among the highlights, GE Vernova moved up into the single-A category and Panasonic was also upgraded, while Delta Air Lines climbed within investment grade. On the downside, the standout was Medical Properties Trust, cut to selective default, and Chinese search group Baidu slipped one notch to A-.

New issues

Companies rushed to sell bonds ahead of the July US inflation report, and investment-grade supply was heavy. Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices priced the largest deal, a four-part sale worth about $4.8bn, and Verizon, Martin Marietta and Charles Schwab also brought multi-billion-dollar offerings. Financing tied to the AI build-out was a clear theme: Zenith Arc, a data-centre project leasing capacity to a major trading firm, sold $2.0bn of green bonds, while Gainwell came with a large refinancing. European issuance was quieter and led by banks such as Swedbank and KBC Group.
