German government bond yields rose again this week, staying near their highest levels of the year. Firmer inflation readings in France and Spain, solid euro-area activity data, and hawkish comments from ECB officials pushed short-dated yields higher. A wave of new government bond supply after the summer break added to the pressure. Markets now expect the ECB to raise rates as soon as September, though some investors think that pricing has gone too far.

US yields moved sharply at the short end after Fed Chair Warsh's hawkish speech at Jackson Hole. He reaffirmed the Fed's 2% inflation target and stressed that interest rates, not the balance sheet, are its main tool. Investors responded by pricing in a real chance of a September rate hike and more than two hikes by 2027. One- to five-year yields jumped the most, while 10- and 20-year yields edged slightly lower. The result was a much flatter curve.

UK gilt yields followed the global move higher, again led by shorter maturities. With inflation still above target, investors trimmed their bets on near-term Bank of England rate cuts, lifting two- and three-year yields the most. Long-dated gilts were little changed on the week, leaving the curve flatter, much like the US and Germany.

For now, the preferred approach favors shorter-dated, higher-quality bonds — earning income at the front of the curve while waiting for better entry points before adding longer-duration exposure.
This week's biggest gainers were led by long-dated, high-quality bonds, which rose as long-term yields slipped. Nature 3.957% 2052, Assured Guaranty 3.6% 2051 and AT&T 5.7% 2057 all climbed as investors reached for longer maturities. Higher-coupon names held firm too, with Domtar 6.75% 2028 and Concentrix 6.85% 2033 among the top movers.

Investment-grade names slipped too, including Credit Agricole 4% 2033 and Athene Global 5.543% 2035, as the week's rate moves weighed on prices.

New bond issuance surged this week as the primary market reopened after the summer lull. Investment-grade supply led the way, with pharmaceutical giants GSK and AstraZeneca each pricing large multi-tranche euro deals — around €3.5 billion and €2.5 billion respectively. Financials and other corporates rounded out a heavy calendar, and demand held up well despite the wave of supply. Issuers are now bracing for an even busier September.
